Some only pay for 15 to 25 hours per month and others will pay for as long as you have them on. Other programs utilize a special view monitor that sits in your system tray, the small tray at the bottom right-hand side of your browser, and only make an alert signal with a little light that lets you decide whether or not to view the incoming ad. If you choose to view the ad, a larger screen pops onto your browser and you watch the advertisement in it. When it is finished, you simply drop it back down into the system tray out of the way waiting for the next advertisement.
